Two-pass Quantile Based Noise Spectrum Estimation
نویسندگان
چکیده
Noise spectrum estimation from a noisy speech signal forms a critical part of such applications as single channel speech enhancement and robust automatic speech recognition (ASR). The two-pass quantile based noise estimation algorithm presented in this paper has the ability to track slow changing non-stationary noise and obtains good estimates for various noise types over a wide range of SNR levels. The essence of the two-pass approach involves first estimating the SNR for each frequency/time point using a fixed quantile value. Based on the estimated SNR, a new quantile level is chosen for each frequency subband. A second noise estimation is then performed. Application of quantile based noise estimation to a single channel speech enhancement system is used to illustrate the ability to suppress noise with little speech distortion.

Elimination of additive noise from a speech signal is a fundamental problem in audio signal processing. In this paper we restrict our considerations to the case where only a single microphone recording of the noisy signal is available. The algorithms which we investigate proceed in two steps: First, the noise power spectrum is estimated. A method based on temporal quantiles in the power spectra...

In this paper, we describe the implementation of three noise estimation algorithms using two different wavelet decomposition methods: Second-generation and Perceptual wavelet packet transform. The three-presented algorithms are: (a) smoothing based adaptive noise estimation, (b) quantile based noise estimation and (c) minimum variance tracking-based noise estimation These algorithms, which do n...

Background noise significantly degrades speech perception for persons with sensorineural hearing impairment. A single-input speech enhancement using adaptive dynamic quantile tracking for estimating the noise spectrum is presented for improving performance of hearing aids. A histogram for each spectral sample is estimated by dynamically tracking ten quantiles and the histogram peak is used as t...

The implementation of three noise estimation algorithms using two different signal decomposition methods: a second-generation wavelet transform and a perceptual wavelet packet transform are described in this paper. The algorithms, which do not require the use of a speech activity detector or signal statistics learning histograms, are: a smoothing-based adaptive technique, a minimum variance tra...

A second-generation wavelet based implementation of two adaptive noise estimation algorithms, which do not require explicit use of voice activity detector or signal statistics learning process, is introduced. The first algorithm utilises a smoothing parameter based on estimation of the wavelet subbands signal-to-noise ratio of the signal. The second algorithm is based on tracking the minimum va...
